After a busy summer at our specialized day camps and a back-to-school season marked by new awareness-raising initiatives, one thing is clear: when families, partners, and the community work together, inclusion becomes a reality.
A Summer That Made a Difference
This summer, more than 100 young people with autism participated in our specialized day camps, and nearly 40 adults took part in the summer programming designed for them.
Beyond the numbers, it is the personal stories that best illustrate the importance of these services.
The specialized day camps meet a vital need. They allow children and teens to enjoy a summer filled with activities, new discoveries, and opportunities to develop their independence, social skills, and self-confidence. They also offer families much-needed respite and the chance to continue their professional lives, knowing that their child is thriving in a supportive and caring environment.
Families have told us in their own words:
“Trait d’Union Outaouais was a lifeline at a time when we had no one else to turn to. They do remarkable work every single day.”
— Sara S.
“TUO’s activities—and the summer camp in particular—contribute greatly to [our child’s] progress.”
— Fernande A.
“In a world often not built for kids like my son, they are an oasis.”
— Kassandra B.
Behind every registration, there is a young person growing up, a family getting a little breathing room, and a community choosing to invest in inclusion.
Autism Hub: Support and Awareness
Direct services—including our day camps and respite care for families—remain at the heart of our work.
The other, equally essential aspect is raising awareness—a cornerstone of our vision for the Autims Hub in the Outaouais: a place where people on the autism spectrum, their families, partners, employers, and the community can find information, support, learning opportunities, and spaces to connect.
This hub continues to expand, with the goal of reaching even more people in the region.
And this fall, it’s more vibrant than ever.
Breaking Down Barriers, One Experience at a Time
On September 26, families from the Outaouais region took part in the Autism Aviation Day event, made possible through a partnership between TUO, Air Canada, Autism Ontario, the Air Canada Foundation, and Ottawa International Airport. Thirty-five participants were able to experience every step of an air travel journey in a supportive and reassuring environment.
For many families, the impact was immediate:
“Thanks to Saturday’s event, he’s now open to the idea of flying somewhere else. It’s a huge victory!
It’s going to take a huge weight off our shoulders for our first family vacation by plane. Long live this initiative!”
— Caroline, mother of two autistic boys
This experience perfectly illustrates what can be achieved when organizations choose to build bridges together.

Better Understanding for Greater Inclusion
October is Canadian Autism Awareness Month, and several events allow us to continue the conversation.
The documentary *Bulles*, presented in partnership with the Université du Québec en Outaouais, LUDICA, and Picbois Productions, offered a unique opportunity to explore the imaginary worlds of young autistic teenagers and to reflect together on neurodiversity, inclusion, and different ways of seeing the world.
Later this month, we will also host the second edition of our TUO Conversation, an awareness-raising breakfast event for local businesses. Scheduled for October 29, this gathering aims to continue the dialogue with employers, managers, and entrepreneurs in order to foster more inclusive workplaces for people with autism.
Together, Year After Year
From specialized day camps to awareness initiatives, a single conviction guides our actions: inclusion is built through everyday actions.
And this inclusion relies on a vast network of collaboration.
Thank you to the families who place their trust in us and to the people on the autism spectrum who enrich our community.
Thank you also to our partners, our funders, the schools that host us, and the entire team that makes these experiences possible year after year.
Finally, thank you to the volunteers, donors, and members of Club TUO who, each in their own way, help make the Outaouais a more welcoming community.
It’s been a remarkable summer. Fall promises to be just as inspiring.
