Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism Spectrum Disorders, of which the best known is autism, are characterized by major differences in five areas of development:
- social interaction
- verbal and non-verbal communication
- cognitive profile
- sensory integration
- withdrawn nature, with stereotypical and repetitive interests and behaviours
Within Autism Spectrum Disorders we also find, Asperger’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder –
Not otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS) and Rett’s Syndrome. Recent statistics state that ASD affects 70 of every
10 000 children. ASD is four times more common in boys than in girls.
